Our Design Process

Starting a building project can feel overwhelming, but the first steps are very important for a good result. At Alan Cook Architects, we work closely with you from the start to finish We provide innovative, cost-effective and realistic design solutions, giving you peace of mind throughout your project.
Here’s how we guide you through the design process:
01

Initial Brief

We start by talking with you to understand what you want and need. This helps us know your goals, style, and how you want to use the space.
02

Measured Survey

If working with an existing building we will carry out a measured survey. This involves measuring the building in question and using the dimensions to create the existing drawings.
03

Site Analysis

We study the location carefully, looking at things like sunlight, views, the landscape, and nearby buildings and interesting features of the surrounding context.
04

Understanding Building Type

Next, we prepare a number of initial options. These options are based on the initial brief and our site/building analysis. We look at the pro’s and con’s option to help you make an informed decision on which direction you want the project to take.
05

Scheme Design and Planning Submission

Once we have a design agreed with you, we will prepare and submit the Planning Application. We will give you updates as to how your application is progressing through the planning system.
06

Working Drawings and Building Control Submission

When the Planning Approval is in place we will then begin the process of preparing the production information or working drawings. These are the detailed drawings that the builder will use to construct the scheme. This information will also be submitted to Building Control to obtain Building Control Approval.
07

Tender Action

When the Planning Approval is in place we will then begin the process of preparing the production information or working drawings. These are the detailed drawings that the builder will use to construct the scheme. This information will also be submitted to Building Control to obtain Building Control Approval.
08

On-Site to Completion

We have the role of architect and contract administrator when the work starts on site. We answer queries from the builder and hold site meetings. We carry out a number of duties that are set out in the JCT contract including the issuing of Interim Certificates and Practical Completion certificates.
To help you see your future building clearly, we use a mix of computer images and hand-drawn sketches. This way, you get a full picture of the design, and the planning service can easily understand the project’s potential.
